St Marys Church

Bach’s most famous choral work, requiring two orchestras and a double choir, is now rarely performed locally. This is a rare opportunity to hear this great work, which is sung by Battle Choral Society augmented by other local singers. Probably first performed in April 1727.

It would have been performed as part of a Good Friday service in St Thomas’ Church, Leipzig. It was revised by Bach in 1730s and early 1740s. For many this is Bach’s greatest work. Our performance is sung in English in an edition compiled by the English tenor Neil Jenkins.
